There is no doubt that many of us are looking for results. And to be honest, we typically want them right away….right?! I am no different and to be honest, I have bought into the fat free fad, the no to low carb fad, and several others. The truth is that initially the results may come BUT do they last? For me, every time I stopped, I gained more weight back. Frustrating….it becomes a vicious cycle and I was TIRED of it. Tired of letting the number on the scale determine how I viewed myself. Tired of letting that stupid number determine my attitude. Tired of letting that number drag me down.
So I decided to adopt the mentality that health and happiness beats a number any day of the week. Overcoming the scale is easier said than done, however, by doing so I can honestly say that I am happier and healthier than I have ever been! These are my tips for becoming FIT FOR LIFE and how I came to adopt them!
Training and staying active is probably a no-brainer and is the physically hard part . Everyone knows that exercise is an important component to building an active lifestyle, however, the way you train is a crucial component to achieving the results you want. Before I found BodyRock.tv and started incorporating HIIT and weights into my workout routine, I was a cardio junkie. I would run or do the elliptical, essentially just going through the motions because this was the easiest way for me to burn calories. And burning calories meant I was going to be “skinny” right? (I’m not saying cardio is ineffective. I think it is a very important part of an active lifestyle and I still incorporate cardio into my plan without it being my primary activity. ) I was in a rut – working hard with nothing changing, so I went out on a limb and tried HIIT. I was reluctant to start because I was skeptical….but after 12 minutes….that rush…I was hooked! And I could do it from home? For FREE? That’s a pretty sweet deal if you ask me!
As I continued to incorporate more HIIT and weight training into my training my mindset started to change. I no longer was focused on being “skinny”, I wanted to be “strong”. I was finally starting to see some definition by building up lean muscle and burning fat. Lifting weights wasn’t scary, it was awesome! I guess I had finally proven to myself that lifting weights wouldn”t make me bulky and it was the missing link to achieving the results I really wanted.
2. EAT CLEAN
Changing your eating habits isn’t easy and is probably THE hardest component to the whole process because it requires self control and is mentally challenging.
Not only is important to eat clean, it is important to eat enough. You may have heard the sayings “Eat for the way you train” or “Abs are made in the kitchen.” It is so true. It took me longer to transition my mindset on this one. The old me was used to restricting calories or trying to follow the latest fad or just not really caring at all and binging on junk. But was I seeing results? No. Was I treating my body with respect? No. I can honestly say that by increasing my calorie intake with the right foods has made me happier, healthier, leaner, and stronger than I have ever been in my life. It feels good to know that I have enough fuel in my body to train the way I want to train because I enjoy it that much more. I am at a point now where I have a good understanding of what my body needs without having to count calories or worry too much about my macros. Figure out what your main goal is and remember : Protein + Carbs = Muscle Gain , Protein + Fat = Maintenance, & Protein + Veggies = Fat Loss. When all else fails, find an athlete, trainer, or figure personality you aspire to look like and out see what they eat, how much, and how often.
3. TRUST THE PROCESS
I say this A LOT! But only because it is true and essentially encompasses all of the above. Trusting the process involves accepting that doing things the healthy way may not give you the body of your dreams overnight, but it will give you the body of your life! I want you to get to a point where you look at yourself in the mirror, and you say “I am worth it” and you love the person you are becoming. Forget about everyone else and focus on YOUR results. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. This is your journey. YOU VS. YOU. Celebrate your little victories, knowing that each day you are becoming happier, healthier, leaner, and fit for life!
Take progress pictures. Now this may seem uncomfortable at first, but I’m not saying you need to show them to anyone. They are for you to gauge your progress. If you continue training hard and continue to work on improving your diet, as time goes on, the comparison may make your jaw drop! And if you didn’t believe in trusting the process when you first started, I bet you do now!
Finally, I’m not saying you have to be perfect and eat spot on all the time, because let’s face it, none of us is perfect. What I am saying is that if you take control and eat clean the majority of the time, those nights out, cheat days, or holiday treats won’t make you feel so bad. Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed…balance. The less pressure you put on yourself to be perfect or achieve instant results, the easier it will be to keep the train on the track and not completely derail.
Stick with it for a week, a month, a year, a lifetime and keep on loving yourself and believing in your journey! #DecideCommitDo
